Cookies and tracking
Every cookie and browser storage item this site uses, what it is for, and how to say no.
The short version
This site uses cookies for two things: to understand how the site is used, and to measure and run my own advertising on Google, Facebook and Instagram. They are set when a page loads, without a consent prompt, because Australian privacy law asks for transparency about tracking rather than prior consent. This page and the privacy policy are that transparency. If you are visiting from the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom or Switzerland, none of the analytics or advertising cookies below are set. Anyone can switch tracking off with the Tracking switch at the foot of every page.
Cookies this site sets
Lifetimes are what a browser actually stores, read from a real visit, and are rounded. Where a provider asks for longer than a browser allows, the shorter figure is the one shown. Providers change them from time to time.
| Cookie | Set by | What it is for | How long it lasts |
|---|---|---|---|
| _ga | Google Analytics 4, through Google Tag Manager | Tells one visitor's browser apart from another so page views can be counted as a visit | About thirteen months |
| _ga_ followed by a property code | Google Analytics 4 | Keeps the state of the current visit for that property | About thirteen months |
| hubspotutk | HubSpot | Identifies your browser so that an enquiry you send can be connected to the pages you visited before and after it | About six months |
| __hstc | HubSpot | Your visit history on this site: first visit, last visit, number of visits | About six months |
| __hssc | HubSpot | The current visit | About 30 minutes |
| __hssrc | HubSpot | Whether this is a new visit | Until you close the browser |
| _gcl_aw | Google Ads, through Google Analytics | Where you arrived from a Google ad, records the click so an enquiry can be attributed to that ad | About 90 days |
| _fbp | Meta pixel, through Google Tag Manager | Tells one visitor's browser apart from another for advertising on Facebook and Instagram | About 90 days |
| _fbc | Meta pixel | Where you arrived from a Facebook or Instagram ad, records the click | About 90 days |
| __cf_bm | HubSpot's own servers, when their script loads | Tells automated traffic from people, so their service is not abused | About 30 minutes |
| _clck | Microsoft Clarity, through Google Tag Manager | Tells one visitor apart from another so repeat visits can be recognised | About one year |
| _clsk | Microsoft Clarity | Joins the pages of one visit together so it can be replayed as a single session | About one day |
Other things stored in your browser
Session storage. If you arrive with campaign tags or a Google or Meta click identifier in the address, the site keeps them in your browser's session storage until you close the tab, so they can be sent with an enquiry if you make one. This is not a cookie and is not sent anywhere unless you send the form.
Your tracking choice. If you switch tracking off, the site remembers that in your browser's local storage (as verto_tracking) so the choice holds on every page and every visit. It is not a cookie, it is never sent anywhere, and switching tracking back on removes it.
Vercel Analytics counts page views without setting any cookie and without identifying you.
What is not on this site
No cookies for chat, no cookies for embedded video, no cookie banner, and no cookies from advertising networks other than Google and Meta. If any of those are ever added, this page changes first.
How to say no
Use the Tracking switch at the foot of any page. Switching it off tells Google Analytics, Google Ads, the Meta pixel, HubSpot tracking and Microsoft Clarity to stop in your browser, clears this site's tracking cookies, and stops Vercel Analytics counting your visits. It holds until you switch it back on or clear your browser's storage for this site. The site works the same either way.
You can also block or clear cookies for this site in your browser settings, or use the providers' own controls: the Google Analytics opt-out extension at tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout, Google advertising settings at myadcenter.google.com, Meta advertising preferences at accountscenter.facebook.com/ads, and the Microsoft Clarity opt-out at clarity.microsoft.com/optout. Microsoft describes how it handles Clarity data at privacy.microsoft.com, and Meta at facebook.com/privacy/policy.
Who to ask
